Dad's Sideways Storage Bin Rack Plans (Free) | @DadAdviceFromBo
Plans to build a storage bin rack to accompany my video.

Overall height: 85” | Overall width: 93 ¼”
NOTE: These plans are for my Sideways Storage Bin Rack video, not to be confused with my regular storage bin rack video. Email me if you have any questions (email can be found in my bio of @DadAdviceFromBo on social media)
Shopping List:
Qty. 20 | 2x4x8’ studs
Qty. 15 | HDX 27-gal Tough Tote (Home Depot)
Qty. 1 | Box of 2 ½” construction screws
Qty. 2 | 4” L Brackets (I used Everbilt 4in Galvanized Corner braces but they were sold out online so linking something similar)
Optional:
(2) Sheets 4x8 plywood for the back (either 1/8”, ¼” or ½”)
(1) Gallon of paint (your choice of color)
(1) Paint brush and paint tray
Cut Sheet (for the 2x4x8” studs):
Cut #1 – 4 @ 93 ¼” (these are your top and bottom horizontal support rails)
Cut #2 – 8 @ 82” (these are your vertical uprights)
Cut #3 – 31 @ 19 ½” (these are your bin supports)
Cut #4 – 1 @ 29” (write: 29” SPACER BLOCK on it)
Cut #5 – 1 @ 19 ½” (write: 19 ½” END PIECE on it)
Cut #6 – 2 @ 12 ½” (write: 12 ½” SPACER BLOCK on it)
Cut #7 – 2 @ 11” (write: 11” SPACER BLOCK on it)
How to assemble:
First Ladder (single sided- this will be an outside ladder):
1) Screw down one 82” upright to a 4x8 sheet of plywood making sure one end and one side to the 2x4 are flush with the plywood (this means lined up square).
2) Position the two 12 ½” SPACER BLOCKS against the top and bottom of the first 2x4 you just screwed down (note: do not screw down the 12 ½” spacer blocks, they are a measurement tool) then place the second 82” upright tight against the spacers with one end flush with the plywood edge then screw it down the upright.
3) Temporally attach the 19 ½” END PIECE to the end of the two uprights where those ends are flush with the plywood.
4) Layout 5 of your 19 ½” bin supports on top of your two vertical uprights.
5) Using the 11” SPACER BLOCKS held tight against the 19 ½” END PIECE, position then attach the first Bin Support using two screws on each end (note: install the screws toward the inside edges of the uprights to avoid splitting the screw within the Bin Supports).
6) Switch to the 12 ½” SUPPORT BLOCKS to install the next four Bin Supports. Be sure to hold the Support Blocks tight against the previously installed Bin support and flush with the two vertical uprights.
7) Remove the screws holding the uprights to the plywood.
8) Remove the 19 ½” END PIECE
Second Ladder (single sided, this will be an outside ladder):
Repeat instructions 1 – 8 above.
Third Ladder (double sided – this will be an inside ladder):
1) Repeat instructions 1 – 7 above then…
2) With the 19 ½” END PIECE still attached to the ladder assembly, flip the entire assembly over but don’t screw it down.
3) Layout 5 of your 19 ½” bin supports on top of your two vertical uprights.
4) Using the 11” SPACER BLOCKS held tight against the 19 ½” END PIECE, position then attach the first Bin Support using two screws on each end (note: install the screws toward the inside edges of the uprights to avoid splitting the Bin Supports).
5) Switch to the 12 ½” SUPPORT BLOCKS to install the next four Bin Supports. Be sure to hold the Support Blocks tight against the previously installed Bin support and flush with the two vertical uprights.
Fourth Ladder (doubled sided – this will be an inside ladder):
Repeat steps for the third ladder above.
Final Assembly:
1) Lay all 4 assembled ladders on their sides and on a flat, level surface. Make sure the double sided ladders are on the inside and the two single sided ladders are on the outside with the Bin Supports facing inward. (Note: it’s helpful to use a tape measure to roughly space the ladders about 29” apart when you start)
2) Lay out two of your 93 ¼” Horizontal Support Rails on both the top and bottom of your positioned ladders.
3) Starting on one end and along the bottom (surface), position one end of your Horizontal Support Rails so it’s flush with the outside edge of the Vertical Upright. Install two screws (note: predrilling pilot holes will help prevent splitting the wood)
4) Using the 29” SPACER BLOCK held tight between the first and second ladders, install two screws through the Horizontal Support Rail into the second Ladder.
5) Repeat #4 for attaching the 3rd and 4th ladders to the first Horizontal Support Rail.
6) Repeat #4 and #5 while attaching the bottom (surface) Horizontal Support Rail on the other end.
7) To attach the top to Horizontal Support Rails, get someone to help hold the other end of the rail or…use clamps to assist holding the rail in place.
8) Repeat steps #4 and #5 above.
9) Position and install your first sheet of plywood. Nail down the 4 foot side first making sure it’s flush with one corner and flush with the edge of the storage rack. Then, pull or push the long edge of the plywood until it’s flush with the long edge of the storage rack. Nail that side down.
10) Use a straight edge of some kind to help you locate the edges of the storage bin racks that you cannot see through the plywood and nail down the plywood completely.
11) Repeat step #10 to install the second sheet of plywood.
12) Trim off the excess plywood using whatever tool you have available.
13) Move the storage bin rack into position and secure the top to a solid surface.
14) Install your 15 storage bins.
As always, engage in construction work at your own risk and always be as safe as possible.

Love, Dad
